Academic freedom is the established and firm policy of Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University to provide, protect, and promote an environment of academic and intellectual freedom of scientific inquiry and publication and the freedom and responsibility of academic instructors to acquaint their students with the various sides of controversial subjects within their fields of subject-matter competency. 

In formally organized classes, lectures, seminars, etc., dealing with specific phases of academic instruction.

The Water Conservation Policy has stated the methods recommended to ensure the prevention of any pollution occurring on campus. In addition, the Engineering & Laboratory Unit  in the university conducts repeated tests at two water outlets. The first outlet is the main water source, and the second outlet is the water coming from the treated water tanks. 

For the water coming from the main water source (national water grid), and the recharging wells. 

The university relies on the policy of reducing water pollution through:

1. Regularly measure the percentage of water pollution
2. A health cultural bulletin between students and employees through courses and workshops
3. Reducing the consumption of chemicals
4.  Commitment to place chemical waste in its designated places on the university campus and not to send it to the water
5. Reduce the Use of Fertilizers. Fertilizers are essential for growing healthy crops, but they can pollute our waterways when used in excess. Over-fertilization leads to algal blooms and fish kills, as these chemicals provide an ideal environment for algae growth. Additionally, the runoff from fields treated with fertilizer can enter nearby streams or groundwater.
6. Minimum amount of detergent .
7. Make sure your soaps and detergents are phosphate-free. Fertilizer, pesticide, and herbicide use should be minimized. Neither sanitary sewers nor storm sewers should be used to dispose of these chemicals, motor oil, or other automotive fluids.

Energy and climate change proposed by Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University in order to respond to the united nation SDG 7 on 2030. 

– Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University set up a sustainable development unit within Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University to follow the guidelines for energy conservation in designated buildings, promote energy conservation and energy substitution usage within the university.

-Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University put different polices such as energy consumption reduction program policy, renewable energy usage policy, greenhouse gas reduction program policy …etc.

-Moreover , various  numbers of plan had been taken into consideration to be helpful in energy consumption reduction such as increasing the numbers of energy efficient appliance, cleaner fossil fuel, sustainable green buildings, investment in renewable energy. 

POLICY 

1. The new buildings is planned, constructed and implemented considering the applicable building regulations, fire code regulations, ADA guidelines, ATU best practices, and zoning code regulations.
2. All campus space is managed and renovated in accordance with the policies and procedures of the appropriate committees in the campus such as the Campus Planning Committee, University Space Committee, University Safety Committee, etc.
3. Appropriate experts and professionals are licensed to design sustainable buildings.
4. Develop plans to increase the efficiency of renewable energy at the university commensurate with the amount of energy consumed
5. Avoid establishing cooperation with carbon-intensive bodies dependent on fossil fuels.

Recycling Program in Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University depends on the four steps to keep and develop the environment 

First step: It is the awareness stage with different workshops and courses for the university staff and students about the importance and meaning of recycling.

Second step: It is the stage of application; There are different containers in the campus with posters to put waste in its specified container according to their color

Third Step: It is the stage of transport of what we can recycle into the company to reuse it in different ways and what we cannot use it move to outside of the city to burial it.

Fourth step: It is centered in the factory to recycle the useful things and then offered it in a new and clean tool

Policies about use minimization- of plastic: 

1- Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University applied Digital Transformation systems with practical courses to learn how to use it and its importance in all its sites to reduce paper and plastic waste in the campus.

2. Moreover Digital Transformation systems the lectures are digital through smart shows and smart boards.
3. The Electronic Document Management System enables all official correspondence to be made completely electronically without printing. This program ensures that correspondence, which holds thousands of pages per year, is stored electronically safely and efficiently and accessed when necessary. As well as using QR codes instead of CD, RAM, or hard-to-store information and reducing Prented files.

4-The university developed ways of sending and receiving formal letters by email. So, now all staffs and students have formal e-mails from the university with the extension (@atu.edu.iq)

5- The third program is to reduce the number of printers and direct those who need it to a common printer in order to print out only when necessary. In addition, output quota is applied for all administrative and academic staff and statistics are monitored by senior management.

6- Moreover, There are free water stations /places to drink water without plastic cans.

7- Practical courses and workshops gave knowledge for participation about the importance of saving the environment and how to develop our programs to save it as possible.
