The Middle Euphrates Technical University, represented by the Head of the Women’s Affairs Division, Assistant Lecturer Ikhlas Razzaq Naham, participated in the National Conference to Launch the 16-Day Campaign to Combat Violence Against Women and Girls. The event was held in Baghdad in the presence of the Deputy Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, Dr. Othman Al-Juhaishi; the Director-General of the Iraqi National Women’s Department, Dr. Yusra Al-Allaq; and the Director of the Women’s Affairs Department at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Nada Al-Abadi, in addition to representatives of governmental and legislative institutions, diplomatic missions, UN organizations, and civil society organizations.

The campaign, held under the slogan “Protecting Women… Ensuring Their Participation in a Safe Society,” aims to highlight the urgent need to develop legislation and policies that guarantee a safe and supportive environment for women and girls. The conference reaffirmed the Iraqi government’s commitment to strengthening women’s protection and expanding their participation in public life.

During the conference, the Director-General of the Iraqi National Women’s Department, Dr. Yusra Karim, emphasized that the campaign’s activities—running from November 25 to December 10—are part of the National Strategy for Iraqi Women 2023–2030 and aligned with Iraq’s international obligations. She stressed that violence against women poses a direct threat to societal peace and security.

Dr. Nada Al-Abadi, Director of the Women’s Affairs Department at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, explained that the Ministry is implementing qualitative programs to enhance women’s academic and professional capacities. She noted that Iraqi universities are key partners in addressing gender-based violence and promoting opportunities for women’s participation and decision-making.

On her part, the representative of the Middle Euphrates Technical University, Ikhlas Razzaq Naham, affirmed that the University’s participation reflects its institutional commitment to supporting women’s issues. She indicated that the University is currently implementing a series of initiatives during the campaign period, including:
• Awareness workshops for female students and staff,
• Media campaigns across colleges and institutes,
• Guidance sessions on digital safety and combating cyber extortion,
• Strengthening research efforts focused on violence-related issues and women’s empowerment strategies.

The conference also featured a detailed presentation on achievements related to protection and political empowerment plans for women. A specialized discussion session was held to address mechanisms for protecting female leaders from cyber extortion during parliamentary elections.

This active participation by the Middle Euphrates Technical University reflects its ongoing vision to foster an academic environment supportive of women and to reinforce its leading role as a key partner in promoting rights awareness and building a safe and just society for all Iraqi women.
