In a remarkable scientific achievement that adds to Iraq’s growing record of accomplishments on the international stage, Mr. Ali Hussein Fahem, a scholarship student pursuing his studies in the United Kingdom – University of Leicester, and a faculty member at the Al-Mussaib Technical College, one of the colleges affiliated with Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University, Department of Power Mechanics Engineering Technologies, has achieved first place at the International Conference on the Sustainability of the Steel Industry (ICSS 2025), recently held at RWTH Aachen University in Germany.

The conference, recognized as a prestigious global platform, focused on discussing the latest scientific discoveries and innovative technologies aimed at achieving sustainability in one of the world’s most vital sectors — the steel industry.

More than 150 researchers from leading universities and renowned research centers around the world participated in this major scientific event, alongside representatives from Germany’s automotive giants such as BMW and Mercedes, as well as German and European governmental organizations.

Discussions during the conference centered on finding scientific and practical solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions resulting from iron and steel production processes. Participants explored ways to reduce these emissions by minimizing steel consumption through smart design approaches, such as using electric arc furnaces instead of fossil-fuel-based furnaces, employing composite materials in the manufacture of pipes and pressure vessels, and adopting new welding methods and materials that reduce future maintenance requirements. The conference also emphasized the use of advanced modeling and simulation techniques to predict potential risks in real-world applications.

Implementing such solutions, according to the experts and officials in attendance, would significantly reduce environmental stress and ensure future generations’ right to live in a cleaner, healthier environment with purer air and water.

In this context, Mr. Fahem’s research presented a novel and intelligent proposal to address this global challenge, earning high praise from the conference’s scientific committee and attendees, and standing out among numerous strong international submissions.

This accomplishment is not only a testament to the dedication and excellence of the distinguished scholar, but also a true reflection of the quality of technical education in Iraq and the capability of its academic staff to compete internationally. Moreover, it reinforces the reputation of Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University and Al-Mussaib Technical College as leading academic institutions producing professionals who contribute effectively to solving global challenges.
