The Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University has achieved a distinguished academic and environmental accomplishment by securing fourth place among Iraqi universities in the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, which evaluates institutions based on sustainability criteria, green campus development, energy management, transportation, and environmentally friendly infrastructure.
Professor Dr. Hussein Lateef Al-Zubaidi, President of the Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University, congratulated the university on this achievement, describing it as an important step toward realizing the university’s vision of becoming a leading regional institution in the field of sustainability and aligning with global standards of green governance.
This accomplishment comes as a culmination of the university’s continuous efforts to promote the principles of sustainable development, enhance resource efficiency, and upgrade its buildings and laboratories in accordance with international green campus policies. It also reflects the direct support of the university presidency and the dedicated efforts of its colleges and institutes in implementing environmentally friendly projects and fostering environmental awareness among students and staff.
The university president also expressed his appreciation for the significant contributions of the Scientific Assistant Office, the Quality Assurance and University Performance Department / Sustainable Development Unit, the central ranking committee, and the sub-ranking committees in the colleges and institutes for their efforts in elevating the university’s standing in this ranking.
The UI GreenMetric Ranking is an internationally recognized framework that assesses universities across six main criteria: infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water, transportation, and education and research. The final results showed that Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University achieved notable progress across all categories.
Furthermore, the university improved its global standing, ranking 197th among 1,745 universities worldwide. The UI GreenMetric results serve as an important international indicator of a university’s efficiency in resource management and enhancement of its educational environment. With hundreds of institutions participating annually from across the globe, this accomplishment significantly strengthens the university’s position among world universities.
