The University President Participates in a Specialized Workshop Organized by the Ministry of Planning on Foresight Studies and Future Scenario Building
The President of Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University, Professor Dr. Hassan Latif Al-Zubaidi, participated in a specialized workshop organized by the Human Development Directorate at the Ministry of Planning. The workshop focused on capacity building in foresight studies and the development of future scenarios, based on population indicators and demographic variables. It was supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and attended by a number of relevant ministry staff, with proceedings lasting for two days.
The University President contributed to a panel discussion on the utilization of demographic indicators in sustainable development planning.
It is worth noting that the Director General of the Directorate, Dr. Maha Abdul Karim Al-Rawi, emphasized that the demographic transformations witnessed in Iraq necessitate the adoption of a strategic foresight approach in policymaking. She pointed out that the results of the 2024 General Population and Housing Census constitute a vital database that can contribute to building more efficient and effective development policies.
She further added that employing these data in the formulation of future scenarios would enhance informed planning. She highlighted that Iraq’s entry into the “demographic window” phase represents a strategic opportunity to support development through optimal investment in youth capacities, affirming that the workshop contributes to strengthening the capabilities of technical staff and supporting decision-makers.
For her part, the UNFPA Representative in Iraq, Dr. Hind Jalal, explained that the results of the 2024 census revealed significant demographic transformations, which call for adopting a planning approach based on foresight and population scenario building.
She noted that developing statistical analysis tools, alongside digital initiatives such as the “Sanad National Platform,” enhances the accuracy and effectiveness of development policies. She affirmed that the workshop aims to equip national cadres with analytical and foresight skills to address future demographic challenges.
The workshop also included specialized sessions covering statistical analysis of demographic phenomena, population projections, and mechanisms for employing scenarios in development planning. These sessions were delivered by UNFPA consultant Dr. Mahdi Al-Alaq, in addition to sessions addressing methodological foundations of demographic foresight, tools for preparing predictive reports, and mechanisms for transitioning from forecasting to policymaking.
