Al-Mussaib Technical College at Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University discussed a master’s thesis entitled “Evaluation of the Performance of Selected Sunflower Genotypes as Affected by Planting Dates,” submitted by researcher Mushtaq Kareem Sarih from the Department of Plant Production Technologies.
The thesis aimed to evaluate the efficiency of a number of selected sunflower genotypes and improve growth characteristics, yield, and oil content, as well as determine the optimal planting date that contributes to achieving the highest productivity and crop quality under Iraqi environmental conditions.
The results demonstrated the superiority of the Argentine genotype (Argensun) in several growth, yield, and oil-content indicators. Most of the studied environments also recorded high values of heritability and genetic gain for the investigated traits, highlighting their potential use in selection and crop improvement programs.
The thesis recommended cultivating sunflower in the central region during the autumn growing season, with planting on June 20 as the optimal date. It also recommended adopting the “Zahrat Al-Iraq” genotype to achieve the best production results, in addition to expanding sunflower cultivation due to its nutritional and industrial importance in enhancing local production and reducing reliance on imports.
