As part of the university’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility, and under the direct supervision of the President of Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University, Professor Hassan Latif Al-Zubaidi, and the follow-up of the Assistant President for Academic Affairs, Professor Ahmed Ghanem Wadai, the Central Library Department and the Human Rights Division, in cooperation with the Diwan Affairs Department and the Agricultural Divisions at the University Presidency, organized a unique environmental initiative to plant clay balls containing seeds of local plants. This initiative was actively participated in by university presidency staff and professors and students of the Nursing Department at the Kufa Technical Institute.
The initiative was implemented in a pilot area within the university courtyards. Students prepared clay balls mixed with seeds of drought-resistant plants, such as Albizia, with the aim of spreading them in desertified lands and areas suffering from deteriorating vegetation cover. The University President praised this initiative, which reflects the students’ awareness and high sense of responsibility toward the environment and society. He emphasized that the University fully supports these activities, which promote a culture of environmental and volunteer work, are consistent with the goals of sustainable development, and contribute to combating desertification, one of the most serious environmental challenges facing Iraq.
The campaign organizers explained that this sustainable environmental method of planting, known as “Seed Balls,” helps protect seeds from weather conditions and animals and increases their chances of growth when rainfall and suitable conditions are available. They emphasized that this activity falls within the University’s plans to promote a culture of human rights by preserving the environment and ensuring the right of future generations to a healthy and sustainable environment.
The initiative received significant interaction from students, who expressed their desire to continue such campaigns in other areas on and off campus.
This event is part of a series of activities organized by the University to support environmental issues and encourage applied research and environmental volunteering among students.
