Under the patronage of the President of the University, Professor Dr. Hassan Latif Al-Zubaidi, and under the guidance and direct supervision of the Assistant President of the University for Scientific Affairs, Professor Dr. Ahmed Ghanem Wadai, and as part of the Anti-Drug Week activities, the Continuing Education Division at the Central Library, in cooperation with the Human Rights Division, the Directorate of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Affairs in Najaf, and the Subcommittee for Combating Extremism and Violence Leading to Terrorism in Najaf, organized an awareness symposium and competition on combating drugs titled:
(Addiction Between Illusion and Reality… How Do We Protect Our Children?)
The event was attended by the Assistant President of the University for Scientific Affairs, Professor Dr. Ahmed Ghanem Wadai, along with a large number of university staff and students. The speakers were:

  1. Mr. Faez Rahim Abdul Ameer – Head of the Media and Public Relations Division at the Directorate of Narcotics Affairs in Najaf.

  2. Assistant Professor Dr. Sahira Aayed Abdul Sahib – Director of the Central Library Department.

  3. Lecturer Assistant Wasan Thabit Rasheed – Head of the Human Rights Division.

  4. Mr. Kazem Matar Kanawi – Computer Center.

The activities aimed to:

  • Raise awareness by informing students about the different types of drugs, including digital drugs.

  • Highlight the severe health, psychological, social, and legal consequences of drug abuse.

  • Strengthen prevention by providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect themselves and their peers from falling into this scourge.

  • Reinforce the role of institutions and emphasize the role of the university and society in combating drugs and reporting them.

A Q&A session was held, which enriched the discussion and enhanced interactive understanding of the issue.

In a parallel scientific event, an awareness competition for students was organized in cooperation with the Nursing Department at the Technical Institute of Kufa, aimed at promoting research and expanding knowledge in the field of drug prevention and control.

The activities concluded with the following recommendations:

  1. Intensifying awareness campaigns and ensuring the university continues to organize workshops, seminars, and initiatives aimed at regularly raising awareness about the dangers of drugs.

  2. Enhancing the role of the family by encouraging institutions to raise parents’ awareness of the importance of monitoring their children and promoting positive values within the home environment.

  3. Strengthening the legal aspect by emphasizing the need for stricter application of laws against drug dealers and users to ensure a safe university and community environment.

  4. Supporting mental health by providing psychological assistance and counseling services for students as a preventive and therapeutic step against addiction.
