Ninety-two Iraqi universities and colleges were included in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, compared with 87 Iraqi higher education institutions in last year’s edition, according to data published on the ranking’s official website.
The current edition witnessed the participation of approximately 2,016 higher education institutions from 110 countries worldwide. The University of Babylon led the Iraqi universities, ranking 101st globally, followed by the universities of Anbar, Al-Mustaqbal, Karbala, Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University, Baghdad, Al-Kafeel, and Warith Al-Anbiyaa. This performance reflects the growing presence of Iraqi higher education institutions in the field of campus sustainability.
The UI GreenMetric ranking assesses university sustainability performance based on six main criteria: setting and infrastructure, accounting for 15%; energy and climate change, 21%; waste, 18%; water, 10%; transportation, 18%; and education and research, 18%.
